POMA BUS

Ladies and gents, for those of you who ski and are unaware of the evacuation procedures for the gondola at the canyon's. This one and only contraption is used to get passengers out of the cabins on the "span", the gap crossing from ridge to ridge and three hundred feet up at the highest point. As far as we know at the Canyon's this is the only POMA bus still in use in the U.S.. Consequently there are also no manufacturers for the track that runs on the haul rope, which is in dire need of replacement.
As rumor has it the creator of the Poma bus put on a demonstration at a state fair at the time of its completion. The track I just mentioned de-roped at the demonstration and he fell a couple hundred feet to his death.
Why the canyons still choose to implement this piece of equipment is beyond the comprehension of most of the mechanics who are required to run it in the event of an emergency. In addition to this our supervisors will not venture out into the middle of the span during training because it's too much of a risk. Also it specifically says in the manual not to operate the bus during inclement weather, icy conditions etc....remember this is a ski lift used mostly in the dead of winter...when do you think an emergency evacuation is most likely to take place??
So next time your skiing at the Canyons resort take a look at the bottom of tower 14 to find the bus, and maybe just maybe you'll be lucky enough to be the first passengers to put our insufficient training to the test!
